Cars are becoming more and more connected to the world around them and as we move towards the era of the connected car and autonomous vehicles, there will be a greater push towards regulatory and technological standardisation. However, in order for an industry to implement a standardised technology, the issue of who has the right to exploit that technology, through licensing or otherwise, must be addressed.

In our article we look at how the automotive sector can learn from the smartphone patent wars, which incurred millions in legal costs, to take a more constructive approach to the licensing of technology which will become essential to the implementation of technical and regulatory standards.

This will no doubt be necessary for everybody wishing to play a part in the sector as the move towards the connected car and autonomous vehicles becomes more and more inevitable.
